In July, RFR West Rand once again hosted their annual function at Usambara just outside Krugersdorp.  This year the theme centred around flamingoes.  Guests were greeted by cheeky little pink flamingoes situated along the pathway winding between the beautiful gardens at Usambara Venue. A welcome sip of sherry or fruit juice greeted the guests before entering the Magali hall. The pink table settings with flower arrangements and a glass centrepiece with a soft candle light created a beautiful atmosphere.

The morning started with the candle lighting ceremony by Heather during which time the Reach for Recovery song, sung by Michael Lindt, was played by our MC,  Tinus Oelofse. Dr Jowie Mbengo, a Reach for Recovery Board Member was our guest speaker.  She explained the need for early diagnoses and screening for breast cancer. She also explained step by step the different procedures for thorough screening. She showed a clip of the annual Pink Polo charity event held for the DITTO Prosthesis Project fund.

Naniki Seboni of Cancervive demonstrated how to do breast examination to the guests. We were entertained by the “Group of old Bags” who did some line dancing, demonstrating that you are never too old to exercise and to enjoy it!

We were honoured with the presence of our National Chairlady, Stephné Jacobs and Winnifred all the way from Pretoria. Shirley Gotschick and a group of Johannesburg volunteers also attended our event.

The three course meal was enjoyed by all and was completed with malva pudding, individual cheesecakes, peppermint tarts and ice cream. Just Mia, The Voice finalist for 2018, played guitar and with her velvety voice took the audience on a journey of remembrance with golden oldies and new songs.

We ended the event with ticket number draws for prizes and the raffle draw for the giant teddy bear. Our West Rand volunteers worked together and put in many hours to accomplish a successful day – enjoy the event through these photos!
