Betty Ford went for a routine check-up after just 6 weeks of being First Lady. At this check-up, a malignant lump was identified in her breast and she was scheduled to undergo the standard treatment.

She held a press conference where she shared details of her surgery and this led to an increase in breast cancer awareness and there was a boom in breast examinations during this time known as the ‘Betty Ford Blip’. Many women were thanking Ford for ‘saving their lives’ as they had been able to detect breast cancer earlier. One such women was Happy Rockefeller who also broadcast her journey with breast cancer leading to further awareness.

These women truly made history and used their voices as significant women to make a difference in the breast cancer sphere. #WomenMakingHistory#Reach4RecoveryBetty Ford
