During October 2014 Hannetjie Carstens decided to host a Pink Braai at her house to raise some money for prostetic devices for women post mastectomy. Hannetjie’s mother in law was diagnosed with breast cancer and both her breasts were removed radically (a week apart from each other). She did not want prosthetic implants but indicated that she would like to have a bra or prosthetic device that she can use in her bra.

Hannetjie invited some friends to a Pink Braai to ensure that their husbands would also join in and enjoyed a great evening. Every family had to contribute at least R100 – some gave more. Families brought their own food and drinks. Everybody enjoyed the specially baked Pink Ribbon cake at the end of the evening. The friends collected R3000 and decided to donate the money towards Reach for Recovery’s Ditto Prosthesis Support Project.

Hannetjie is hoping to make this an annual event and to move to a bigger venue to invite many more friends to join in a big Pink Braai for breast cancer.
