Breast cancer survivors!

Practical and emotional support to breast cancer patients

“This is your chance to change lives – including your own”

You are a breast cancer survivor and an inspiration!

Why not seize an opportunity to share your strength with others? Become a Reach for Recovery volunteer and offer peer support to newly-diagnosed women.

How peer support works

When someone finds out they have breast cancer, they may feel overwhelmed, vulnerable, and alone. While under this stress, they must also learn about complex medical treatments and choose the one that’s right for them.

Talking with a specially trained Reach for Recovery volunteer, who is herself a breast cancer survivor, during this time can provide a measure of comfort, as well as an opportunity for emotional grounding and informed decision-making.

Volunteer training

To become a peer support volunteer you have to be a breast cancer survivor and at least 12 months post diagnosis and treatment.

Our peer support training happens online in May of each year.

  • Training is based on the vetted RRI “Breast Cancer Support Service” visiting programme.
  • The programme fosters an open and productive relationship between volunteers, patients, family and members of the medical and allied professions.
  • It is non-medical, in other words, our volunteers do not interfere in any way with the patient’s relationship with her physician and other health care professionals.
  • Reach for Recovery volunteers are taught how to offer understanding, support, and hope.
  • Because they themselves have survived breast cancer and gone on to live normal, productive lives, they serve as an example to other women.

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow.

Learn as if you were to live forever.”

What are the benefits of volunteering for Reach for Recovery?

Mahatma Gandhi said, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”

Volunteering can help you to learn or develop a new skill which could bring you lots of joy and fulfilment!

  • You will join a group of very special people who give back to their community by helping others. The joy of seeing and experiencing the impact of your services will give you a wonderful sense of achievement.
  • Volunteers come from all backgrounds and walks of life. You will be meeting new people and be inspired by their own stories and reasons for volunteering.
  • This is also a wonderful opportunity to develop lasting friendships.
  • ️Volunteering will help you to grow as a person, gain new experiences and realise that no task is too small to have an impact on someone or a whole community.
  • As a trained volunteer you will become a wonderful ambassador for Reach for Recovery in your community!

We can still use your help!”

Other volunteer services

Breast health education

If you are an ex teacher/nurse or any person who loves doing presentations and educating people, you are the ideal person to become a Breast Health Education Volunteer !

You will be trained to provide breast cancer education and early detection services to women at community outreaches in your area. There are still too many women who are not aware of the importance of early detection and about resources available in their community.

You can help us to reach them and help save lives!

Administration and bookkeeping

As an admin volunteer you will be providing support to the Reach for Recovery Group with their monthly statistics, monthly financial reconciliation sheets, filing of RRI (Patient) Forms, help take minutes during meetings, etc.

Fundraising

The primary expenditures for Reach for Recovery are for the training of volunteers, support service to breast cancer patients (which includes the care bag we provide) and the breast prosthesis programme.

Community fundraising is about mobilising communities to support the Reach for Recovery cause. It is what many people think of when they think of the term ‘fundraising’ and can comprise events, bake sales, raffles, table sales, and much more!

We’ve had passionate fundraisers climb Kilimanjaro, run the Paris Marathon or the Comrades Ultramarathon to raise money for RFR. We’ve had art auctions and fashion shows, cold water and long distance swims, PADEL tournaments, beauty pageants and dance-athons! And most recently a Pink Bridge Drive which has the potential to become an annual event.

If you have a fundraising idea or an event planned, please contact our National Manager at: nationalmanager@reach4recovery.org.za
